The Managing Director of Ibom Power Company Limited, Engr. Meyen Etukudo has challenged the women of Ikpetim village in Ikot Abasi to present any girl child from Ikpetim with admission into a federal university to study medicine, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering for automatic scholarship from Ibom power.
The MD spoke yesterday at the commissioning of a cassava mill by the Ikpetim Women Development Association, the umbrella body of all the women in Ikpetim village, the immediate host community of the 191 megawatts Ibom power plant.
He said, “Ibom power will need a medical doctor in the future, these are areas with few females, we want to encourage women to also study professional courses like medicine and engineering and we are giving the Ikpetim women the opportunity to produce a female candidate from Ikpetim village for this scholarship”.
Speaking on the commissioning of the cassava mill, Engr. Etukudo who noted that Ibom power relates with Ikpetim village as an entity because they are the immediate host community, said Ibom power embarked on the cassava mill and the building as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
The President of Ikpetim Women Development Association, Esther Ufot Monday who could not contain her excitement at the commissioning of the mill lauded the management of Ibom power for the gesture, which she said will improve the economy and productivity of women in Ikpetim village.
She said, “The establishment of this multi-purpose mill has brought progress to the existence of the Ikpetim Women Development Association and Ikpetim community as a whole. We are grateful to Ibom power for the partnership and their effort for making the dream of this multi-purpose mill a reality”.
In show of appreciation, the women presented a plaque to the MD stating that Ikpetim women now have a functional cassava processing mill courtesy of Ibom power company under the leadership of Engr. Meyen Etukudo.
The Village Council Chairman of Ikpetim village, Emmanuel Usen Etukafia, appreciated the MD for the offer of scholarship to any girl child from Ikpetim. He said education prepares people for the future and the MD has demonstrated commitment to the future of Ikpetim through the offer of scholarship.
He also commended the leadership of Ikpetim Women Development Association for the completion of the project and urged them to ensure its sustainability.
