The Managing Director of Ibom Power Company, Dr. Victor Udo urged Akwa Ibom students to embark on renewable energy research that will proffer solutions to the challenges in Nigeria’s power sector using technologically sustainable approach.

He made this statement in Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic while addressing over 750 participants at the 8th Conference of Science, Technoloy, Management and Development  (STMD) on the theme “Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development”.

The MD who was the Chairman of the occasion said “sustainable development is not the sustenance of development; rather it is the development that will not jeopardize future generations while meeting the present generation needs”.

Speaking on the ecological implication of development, Dr. Udo said that “if everyone on the planet was to have a similar standard of living as in the developed world, the resources on the planet will be insufficient to meet everyone’s needs.

“This formed the basis for ‘ecological footprint’ and  ‘carrying capacity’ challenges necessitating equitable sustainable development.

“Any development that is purely based on economic factors is not sustainable; every good development must put into consideration both economic and ecological implications” he said.

Dr. Udo who did his Ph.D. research on sustainable development said “what I discovered from my research was that countries with higher sustainable development capacity had adopted the use of renewable sources like solar, hydro, wind and other cleaner  energy solutions.

He said “for us to achieve sustainable development, we need good governance and good infrastructure. There is also the need for us to ensure the use of more renewable energy resources.

He therefore charged the students to embark on groundbreaking research on the adoption of renewable energy sources for sustainable development.

Other key participants at the conference included Prof. M.O. Iwe who was the Keynote speaker; Hon. Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Iniobong Essien;  Hon. Commissioner for Education represented by Elder AniekanAkpan, Rector, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Dr. (Barr.) Israel Affia and the  Transition Chairman, Ikot Ekpene LGA, UnyimeEtim.
