IBOM POWER INSTALLS MECHANISM TO RUN OFF-GRID

A mechanism known as Dead Bus Closure, which will allow Ibom power plant evacuate power within Akwa Ibom State independent of the national gird, has been installed in the 115megawatts capacity unit 3 of Ibom power.
The Deputy Managing Director of Ibom Power, Engr. Nelson Usiere who disclosed this said, “with the installation of the Dead Bus Closure, Ibom power plant can recluse and continue to evacuate power to Akwa Ibom State even when the National grid collapses”.
He said the Management of Ibom power put this measure in place to mitigate threats to the plant’s lifespan due to the incessant grid collapses, which also inhibits the plant’s optimal performance.
“Before the installation of the Dead Bus Closure, whenever the national grid collapses, Ibom power plant runs on Full Speed No Load (FSPNL). FNSL means that the plant is running but there is no output, eventually we will shut down especially if it takes too long for the national grid to be restored” he said.
The DMD stated further, “The installation of a Dead Bus Closure extends the lifespan of the power plant because it reduces the number of starts the plant undergoes”.
Engr. Usiere however, called on Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) to improve the distribution network across the State. He said, “there is sufficient power generation in the State but the benefits will be more felt if the distribution infrastructures across the State are in good condition”.
